For petrol and diesel cars, sustained extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable for the driver — it places real mechanical stress on systems that weren't designed to operate at these temperatures for days on end. Here's what actually matters.

Engine overheating is the most common heatwave breakdown

One of the most common causes of summer breakdowns is engine overheating, and the mechanism is simple: your coolant regulates engine temperature year-round, not just in winter, and low coolant levels can lead to overheating quickly, particularly in slow-moving traffic or on long motorway journeys.   • Radiator, water pump, and thermostat — verify they're all working efficiently, and use high-quality coolant with an increased boiling point to keep the engine operating at a safe temperature
  • Engine oil level — check and top up when necessary, since cars use more fuel and run hotter in heavy traffic and start/stop conditions

If your temperature gauge starts climbing toward the red:

Switch off the air conditioning and reduce engine load where possible. If a warning light appears, pull over safely — never continue driving with an overheating engine, as this can cause severe and expensive engine damage. If you do see the gauge in the red with smoke from the engine, switching from air-con to the heater actually helps draw heat away from the engine, despite seeming counterintuitive. Once safely stopped, turn off the engine, and if you open the bonnet be aware that escaping steam and hot air can cause serious burns — never touch any part of the engine until it has fully cooled.

  • Cover leather seats with a blanket or jacket if parking in direct sun — leather genuinely becomes a hotplate in these temperatures
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even briefly

Don't ignore washer fluid and wipers

It sounds unrelated to heat but summer storms arrive with little warning after heatwaves break, and worn wiper blades reduce visibility during heavy rain and smear dirt across the windscreen rather than clearing it. Keep washer fluid topped up — summer driving means more dust, pollen, and insect splatter than any other season, and clear visibility is non-negotiable whatever the weather.

What about EVs and hybrids?

Electrified vehicles handle heat differently, and the picture is more nuanced than “EVs struggle in hot weather.” AAA's 2026 testing found EVs show a 10.4% reduction in efficiency and an 8.5% loss of driving range at 95°F (35°C) compared to a moderate 75°F, while hybrids see a 12% decrease in fuel efficiency over the same range — both noticeably smaller penalties than either powertrain suffers in cold weather. Other independent testing puts heat-related range loss higher, with some EVs losing up to 17% of battery performance at 95°F, meaning a 350-mile EV could lose around 60 miles of range on the hottest days.

The mechanism is straightforward: air conditioning and thermal management systems draw extra power to keep the battery, motor, and electronics within their optimal temperature range, and that power has to come from somewhere. EVs are not in danger of sudden failure from heat the way some headlines suggest — researchers tracking tens of thousands of EVs have found no single heat wave causes sudden, catastrophic range loss. What heat does affect is long-term battery degradation, with batteries in hot climates degrading roughly 0.4% faster per year than those in milder regions, an effect that compounds meaningfully over several years of ownership.

Practical steps for EV and hybrid owners in extreme heat:

  • Precondition the cabin and battery while still plugged in — this uses grid power rather than draining the battery, and starts your journey with an already-cooled pack
  • Avoid charging to 100% and leaving the vehicle parked in direct sun for extended periods, especially above 30°C — keeping daily charge between roughly 20–80% reduces voltage stress and heat generation
  • Where possible, charge during cooler periods — early morning or overnight — rather than fast-charging during peak afternoon heat, since rapid charging generates significant additional heat in an already-warm pack
  • Park in shade or a garage whenever possible to reduce the workload on the thermal management system
  • Keep tyres properly inflated, since this reduces rolling resistance and helps offset some of the efficiency loss from running the AC

The bottom line

Sustained extreme heat is now a recurring feature of European summers, not a rare event, and the mechanical and efficiency risks compound the longer the heatwave lasts. For combustion engine cars, coolant, belts and hoses, battery health, and tyre pressure are the four checks that prevent the overwhelming majority of heat-related breakdowns. For EVs and hybrids, the priority shifts to thermal management — preconditioning, smart charging timing, and avoiding prolonged full-charge exposure to direct sun. All of these take minutes to check and cost very little compared to the cost of a roadside breakdown or genuine damage in 38°C heat.
